A three day drive through Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany and Austria to Italy. We’d decided to visit Neuschwanstein Castle, built by Mad King Ludwig in Bavaria, but were really disappointed to see huge crowds there which almost put us off. However, as it seemed unlikely we’d ever drive this way again, we bought timed tickets – nothing until 4.20 which involved hanging around for 3 hours. It was warm and sunny despite the snow all around us, so we decided to walk slowly up there with a picnic rather than take the horse-drawn carriage.
I have never been up so many spiral staircases! The painted rooms were of course over-the-top but better than I’d imagined and it was definitely worth the visit, except that we then had to cross the Alps in the dark.
