My friend the Director of the Canal Museum in Battaglia Terme (and the last bargeman) rang me a couple of days ago.
“You’re a small person with a big brain,” he said. “Can you help?”
Apparently since the latest general election in Italy neither the municipality nor the region is willing to continue funding my favourite little Italian museum, and the sponsors also wish to cut back. As they’re already running on a shoestring, mainly with volunteers, he can’t see any alternative but closure. It has such an important history, (the canal is over 800 years old) telling the story of carrying the stones which paved Venice, that I can’t believe it could simply close.
Is there anyone out there who could offer advice?
